How to use an industrial gas filter
1. Install the gas filter correctly
This is where most problems start.
-
Check flow direction → there’s always an arrow on the filter body. Match it with gas flow.
-
Install before key components
Usually:
Gas source → filter → regulator → solenoid valve → burner -
Keep it accessible
Don’t bury it. You’ll need to clean it regularly. -
Vertical mounting preferred
Bowl facing downward helps trap dirt and condensate.
2. Before starting the system
Always do this before opening gas:
-
Make sure the filter bowl is clean and properly sealed
-
Confirm the O-ring / gasket is intact
-
Slowly open the upstream shut-off valve to avoid a pressure shock
-
Check for leaks (soap solution or gas detector)
3. During operation
While the system is running:
-
Watch the pressure drop across the filter
-
Sudden drop = clogged element
-
-
Listen for abnormal noise (whistling = blockage)
-
Ensure stable flame at the burner
(dirty filters cause unstable combustion)
4. Cleaning & maintenance (very important)
How often depends on gas quality, but monthly inspection is common.
Cleaning steps:
-
Shut off gas supply
-
Release residual pressure safely
-
Remove the filter bowl
-
Take out the filter element (mesh or cartridge)
-
Clean with:
-
Compressed air (blow from inside → outside)
-
Or mild solvent (if manufacturer allows)
-
-
Dry completely
-
Reinstall and tighten properly
⚠️ If the element is damaged or heavily corroded → replace it, don’t reuse.
5. Common mistakes to avoid
These kill filters fast:
-
Installing backwards
-
Never cleaning until the burner fails
-
Using the wrong filter rating (mesh too fine or too coarse)
-
Ignoring condensate or oil buildup
-
Overtightening the bowl (cracks it)
6. When to replace the filter
Replace immediately if you see:
-
Torn or deformed mesh
-
Heavy rust or scale
-
Repeated clogging in short time
-
Gas pressure can’t recover after cleaning
Pro tip (from field experience 😉)
If your solenoid valves or regulators keep failing early, 90% of the time the gas filter is undersized or poorly maintained.
