How to select a good gas burner for an industrial combustion system
Selecting an industrial gas burner involves matching the burner to your process, ensuring proper heat capacity (including a 10–20% safety margin), and identifying fuel type, gas pressure, and emission regulations. Key factors include selecting the right air supply (forced-draft vs. atmospheric), achieving high combustion efficiency, and ensuring the flame shape fits your furnace or boiler structure.
1. Define the Application and Requirements
- Application Type: Identify if the burner is for a boiler, furnace, oven, kiln, or heater.
- Heat Input Capacity: Calculate the required thermal input (kW, MW, or BTU/h), considering both the maximum load and thermal losses. Oversizing leads to inefficiency; undersizing results in low productivity.
- Flame Shape & Size: Choose a flame (long, short, wide) that matches the combustion chamber to prevent flame impingement on materials.
- Operating Conditions: Determine if the operation is continuous or batch, and if the environment is indoor or outdoor.
2. Fuel, Pressure, and Air Supply
- Gas Type & Quality: Confirm the gas type (Natural Gas, LPG, Propane, Biogas) and pressure.
- Combustion Air Supply:
- Forced-draft burner: Uses a blower; suitable for high capacity.
- Premix burner: Air and gas mix before combustion.
- Nozzle-mix burner: Air and gas mix at the flame nozzle.
- Burner Mounting: Determine if the burner will be wall-mounted or in-duct.
3. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Turndown Ratio: Select a burner with a high turndown ratio (maximum vs. minimum fuel consumption) for flexibility across varying workloads.
- Efficiency & Emissions: Choose burners designed for low
and
to meet environmental regulations, which also often indicates higher efficiency.
- Controls: Opt for modulating controls to adjust output to actual demand, enhancing energy efficiency.
